The quick answer
Measure from the light-emitting surface to the highest healthy leaves. For a separate LED fixture, begin with the manufacturer’s recommended herb or leafy-greens distance; if no crop chart exists, University of Minnesota Extension’s 6-to-12-inch range for hydroponic lettuce and herbs is a more defensible starting point than guessing from wattage alone.
An all-in-one countertop garden is different. Its lamp height, optics, timer, and planting deck were designed together, so use the supplied arms or adjustment mechanism exactly as the model instructions describe. Do not force the lamp closer because a generic chart uses a smaller number.
University of Minnesota Extension lists 6 to 12 inches between a light and hydroponic lettuce or herbs. Treat that as general guidance, not permission to override the instructions for an integrated countertop garden or a hotter, more powerful fixture.
Why one distance cannot fit every grow light
Distance changes how much light reaches a canopy, but the result also depends on the fixture’s power, beam spread, spectrum, heat, and daily runtime. Two lights can sit the same number of inches above basil and deliver very different conditions.
Plant stage matters too. A low seedling canopy may sit farther from a fixed lamp than mature leaves do. A mixed garden can also develop high and low zones, allowing tall basil to crowd the lamp while parsley or thyme below receives less light. Pruning and crop placement can solve that geometry more safely than repeatedly moving the whole fixture.

- Measure to the tallest leaves, not to the pot rim or counter.
- Consider light duration and coverage as well as distance.
- Recheck after every growth spurt or substantial harvest.
Fixed countertop gardens need model-specific setup
Click & Grow’s current extension-arm instructions show why generic spacing rules can mislead. The Smart Garden 3 starts without an extension; the first extension is added when plants are almost touching the lamp. The Smart Garden 9, however, should start with its included pair of extensions so the light spectra mix as intended, and the company warns that adding a second pair can leave plants tall and leggy from insufficient light.
The LetPot LPH-SE uses a different approach: its official product page describes an adjustable, rotatable light panel with a maximum light height of 30 inches. That gives you more room to manage a changing canopy, but the maximum height is a hardware specification—not a promise that herbs receive enough light at that distance. Raise or lower it according to the current manual, crop guidance, and plant response.
Read the leaves and stems before moving the lamp
Too little light often appears as long, thin stems, wide spaces between nodes, pale foliage, small leaves, or plants leaning toward the brightest edge. University of Minnesota Extension identifies leggy growth and pale-to-yellow foliage as common low-light responses; Penn State Extension notes that underlit herbs become thin and spindly with smaller, less aromatic leaves.
Too much light can produce bleached or scorched areas. Heat from some bulbs adds another risk even when light intensity is acceptable. Check the newest exposed leaves and the air near the canopy before concluding that every dry or curled edge is a watering problem.

Use a seven-day adjustment routine
Make one modest change at a time, record the lamp-to-canopy distance, and leave the timer and watering routine unchanged for several days. Photograph the same side of the garden on day one and day seven. New growth is more informative than damage on an old leaf that cannot reverse.
If stems remain thin and stretched, move an adjustable light slightly closer within the approved range or improve coverage. If the newest top leaves bleach, scorch, or feel unusually warm, move the fixture farther away or reduce intensity according to its controls. Stop and return to the manual if the fixture or plant response falls outside its documented setup.
Keep the canopy even instead of chasing the tallest plant
A single overgrown herb can make the entire garden look too close to the lamp. Harvest basil above a leaf node, cut mint before it shades its neighbors, and remove crowded seedlings. This brings the canopy back into the fixture’s useful zone without depriving compact herbs of light.
For windowsill pots under a shared lamp, rotate containers for even exposure as Penn State Extension recommends. Do not rotate an integrated pod deck if the manufacturer assigns fixed planting or light zones; rearrange only when the system instructions allow it.
Measure cabinet clearance before the garden fills in
Leave room above an adjustable lamp for its full permitted travel, and keep enough side access to refill the reservoir, prune, and remove pods. A garden that technically fits under a cabinet may still be unusable once the lamp rises and mature leaves spread beyond the base.
Keep foliage away from hot bulbs and electrical connections. Do not hang fabric, reflective film, or improvised shades against a lamp unless its manufacturer approves that setup. If you want to compare integrated systems, use the published maximum lamp height alongside footprint, light schedule, pump behavior, and cleaning access—not as a standalone performance score.
